Mentor Corner: Meet Lexcy Li

Meet Lexcy Li
Lexcy has mentored with entrepreneurship@UBC since June of 2020 with both CORE and Lab2Launch programs. She has worked with a range of UBC entrepreneurs including the team at Nyoka, CanDry and Nano Tech Innovation. Lexcy has been involved in the BC biotech/tech environment for over 6.5 years, starting as a Product Manager with alumni venture Aspect Biosystems and currently with Precision Biomonitoring. Throughout her previous work experience, she’s always been passionate about providing the best possible outcomes and establishing supportive relationships. She enjoys working as part of a team or independently in a professional manner to achieve goals. Lexcy is a UBC alumni, with both her Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science from UBC.

How did you get involved with mentorship? What brought you here? What keeps you coming back?
I love innovation and being part of a thriving and collaborative ecosystem. I learned about entrepreneurship@UBC during my time at Aspect Biosystems and I reached out to e@UBC to explore ways I could be involved in this community. I wanted to share my limited experience and knowledge but mainly to learn from other mentors and ventures themselves.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your mentorship career?
Being very open minded and practicing active listening are key to communicating and building fruitful relationships with early ventures.
When working with early-stage startups, you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the founders you are working with. What impacts have founders made on you?
The founders have made me realize and appreciate the amazing startup ecosystem we have here. Founders have also shown me one can learn something new every time one re-does an e@UBC exercise, and one can always improve his/her pitch!

If you could impart one piece of sage advice for our community, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and reach out to people in this community. Everyone I have met is extremely approachable and is willing to help.
What book are you reading? What playlist are you listening to? What is the app you can’t quit?
I love “How I built this” with Guy Raz and “Business Wars” by Wondery. I am currently reading “In Defense of Troublemakers”.
