Join us January 16-20, 2023 for Foundation Week! This weeklong series of events will feature info sessions, workshops and meetups designed to bring our community of ventures and partners together to dive into the basics of entrepreneurship, meet our team and collaborators and create networks across communities.

Foundation week includes a series of events for our immediate venture community and wider ecosystem to partake in, ranging from branding basics and speech crafting workshops, to meeting our Venture Studio Leads, longtime collaborators and more!

Events will be held across various locations (details below) with Zoom links for online sessions included in your confirmation email.

Foundation Week Events:

Monday, January 16

>> 2:00 - 6:00 pm: HATCH Venture Builder Orientation and Social - We will be welcoming the newest teams joining HATCH Venture Builder with a series of events designed to introduce them to the program, tour the ICICS Makerspace and celebrate their new achievement with fellow HATCH teams.

  • Who is it for?: This session is invite only for new HATCH teams, Entrepreneurs in Residence and staff
  • Where is it located?: In person at ICICS on UBC Point Grey Campus

 

Tuesday, January 17

>> 11:30 - 1:00 pm: Brand Building Basics Workshop - Building your brand is fundamental to venture creation. Who you are and the story you share with the world will come through in everything you do from your website and marketing materials to your pitch deck and presentations. Get the basics on all things branding, marketing and design in Tuesday’s lunchtime workshop led by entrepreneurship@UBC's Marketing Team, Entrepreneur in Residence, Head of Venture Growth Strategy Michelle Sklar, Communications Coordinator Alison Webster and Creative Specialist MJ Araujo.

>> 4:30 - 6:00 pm: Goal Setting Workshop - The start of the year marks a new opportunity to reflect on the past and home in on your goals. Join CORE Stream Lead and Social Venture Studio Lead Angela Hamilton in this 90 minute workshop to set your intentions for the year and map your route to achieving success in 2023! Come prepared with something to write with (a physical piece of paper or journal), a cup of tea or glass of wine, remove distractions and be ready to focus on your new year.

Wednesday, January 18

>> 12:00 - 1:00 pm: January Community Town Hall - Join the entrepreneurship@UBC team at our first Town Hall of the new year to learn more about what we do, what’s coming up for us in 2023 and how you can engage! Meet the newest cohort of HATCH Ventures and hear from our team and ventures in a panel including the Co-founders of MintList, Hubly and Verdi!

  • Who is it for?: This session is designed for our venture community and wider ecosystem
  • Where is it located?: In person at the Graham Lee Innovation Centre (lower level Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre) at UBC Point Grey Get Directions
  • Guest Speakers: Dr. Mehrsa Raeiszadeh, Co-founder and COO, MintList, Louis Retief, Co-founder and COO of Hubly and Roman Kozak, Co-founder and CTO of Verdi

 

>> 1:00 - 2:30 pm: Venture Studio Office Hours - Meet entrepreneurship@UBC's Venture Studio Leads and learn more about how to engage with the Climate, Human Health and Social Venture Studios! Ask your questions directly to our team.

Thursday, January 19

>> 12:00 - 1:00 pm: Speech Crafting Workshop - Uncover the best practices for sharing your story and making an impact on your audience in this Speech Crafting Workshop led by Entrepreneur in Residence, Head of Venture Growth Strategy Michelle Sklar.

  • Who is it for?: This session is private for our venture community who have been or are currently enrolled in programming with entrepreneurship@UBC
  • Where is it located?: In person at UBC Robson Square in the Innovation Space (room 1900 opposite the skating rink) Get directions

>> 4:30 - 6:00 pm: January Female Founder Meetup - Join us for our first Female Founder meetup of the year designed for our community of female and non-binary founders, leaders, mentors and supporters.

Friday, January 20

>> 9:30 - 11:00 am: Info Session with our Collaborators - Hear from our friends at BLANKSLATE PARTNERSFasken Law , Switchboard Public Relations and Tandem Innovation Group on how we collaborate and how you as a UBC entrepreneur can benefit. Each partner will be presenting information on how we work together and best practices for early-stage ventures.

>> 12:30 - 1:30 pm: Raising Seed Capital in 2023: What Ventures Need to Know - There are seven evergreen rules of building fundamentally fundable startups that all early-stage founders need to know. These rules allow ventures to raise at higher valuations, raise faster and raise from the top investors. In good capital markets, such as the last two years, they were 'nice to have' but in a market climate like today, these rules are a 'must have' for ventures to successfully raise seed capital.
