February 20, 17 (Vancouver, B.C.) – The Life Sciences Institute and entrepreneurship@UBC at the University of British Columbia are hosting the second annual Life Sciences Startup Competition – creating an avenue where researchers and students can strategize on translating a research idea to market.
Seven teams participated in the inaugural competition in 2016. To date, three of those teams incorporated their startups and one team is still working on their project in a lab setting.
“Many life sciences researchers have brilliant scientific ideas that could make a big difference in both medical and environmental fields. We launched this competition in an effort to give students, post docs and research associates at UBC a first introduction to financial and legal concepts that are crucial for developing a business plan for their inventions,” says Elana Guslitser, Associate Director for Commercialization at the UBC Life Sciences Institute.
This year, the Startup Competition invited teams to submit their applications in November 2016, complemented by workshops to help build a solid startup foundation to all potential entrepreneurs back in September.

The finalists that will be pitching on February 23 represent various areas of Life Sciences research, spanning across multiple faculties at UBC. The teams are:
- Curos Labs seeks to help chronic pain sufferers improve their quality of life by helping them track, analyze, and report their symptoms more effectively
- EEGlewave aims to provide a biomarker data management platform for concussion assessment
- Epilab is a preclinical-stage drug discovery company, developing a novel anti-epileptic drug and neuropathic pain medication screen.
- Jooles is a mood and symptom tracker for young women aged 11-15
- MIT (Medical Information Technology) Healthcare develops point of care diagnostics using multi parametric measures
- NeuraGap offers services and consultations for pre-clinical validations in rodent stroke models
- Okussa Medical aims to develop a low cost device to improve the quality of care and respiratory rate monitoring of pediatric patients in low resource settings
- Rejuvagen is a preliminary start up idea focused on providing consumers with personalized sleep solutions based on their genetic background
- Tesseract Technologies are developing a new material for treating brain aneurysms
- TheraTrix is a new company that develops innovative technologies to control pathological tissue repair
- Torq has developed a new tourniquet that meets the demanding needs of low-resource hospitals in developing countries around the world.
